Introduction
These essays about institutions come out of sparring with Claude Fable, an AI made by Anthropic. Most sentences are Claude's. Some of the points are mine, and some I learn from Claude. I approve every point.
At 56 years and 222 days old, writing "On Shelving Books", I understood that institutions interest me as science interests so many people whom I know.
The process by which I acquire participant knowledge about institutions has three steps:
Working within an institution, I notice a detail that surprises me given what I know about another institution.
I ask why that detail is the way that it is.
The answer teaches me something about this institution at large.
Institutions that I know and want to know:
Universities
Public Schools
The Library of Congress
Bell Ringing in Churches
